We’re intentional about a lot of things in life—our work, our money, our commitments. But how often are we truly intentional about having fun?
You’d think fun would come naturally—like it did when we were kids, barefoot and running through sprinklers without a care in the world. But the truth is, by midlife, our to-do lists are long, our responsibilities are heavy, and joy can quietly slip to the bottom of the pile.
Fun starts to feel like a luxury rather than a necessity. Something we’ll get to… eventually.
But here's the truth: joy is not optional. It’s a lifeline. And if you're feeling stagnant, bored, or like you're just going through the motions—it's time to sprinkle a little adventure back into your week.
The Magic of Mini-Adventures
A while back, I noticed something unsettling. In my Find Your Center Journal, there's a daily prompt to list what you're looking forward to. More often than not, my answer was the same: “Watching my favorite TV show tonight.”
That was it.
Don’t get me wrong—I love a good show and a cozy couch moment. But when that’s the only thing I was anticipating, it became crystal clear that something was out of balance. I needed more spark. More movement. More me.
Enter: the weekly mini-adventure.
Think of it like intentional joy. A little treat you give yourself every week—not for being productive, not for checking off boxes—but simply because life is meant to be lived.
What Counts as a Mini-Adventure?
Honestly? Anything that feels a little out of the ordinary and brings a smile to your face.
🌿 Checking out a new coffee shop
🌿 Exploring a park you’ve never been to
🌿 Strolling through a flea market
🌿 Visiting a new bookstore or plant shop
🌿 Horse yoga (yes, really—I’ve done it twice!)
Sometimes it’s a solo escape, just for me. Other times, my husband or a friend joins in. But I’ve learned not to wait around for someone else’s schedule. I used to put off doing fun things, hoping we could do them together—until I realized I was letting my joy sit on hold.
Now, I treat my mini-adventures as sacred. A special self-care date with myself.
And I can’t overstate how powerful it is to have something to look forward to each week. It lightens my energy, breaks up the routine, and reminds me that fun doesn’t have to be big or expensive—it just has to be intentional.
How to Start Your Own Mini-Adventure Practice
Ready to add a little more joy and movement to your life? Here are a few gentle tips to get you going:
✨ Plan ahead (at least a little). Spontaneity is great, but when life gets busy, “maybe I’ll do something fun” often turns into “oops, maybe next week.” Put it on your calendar so you have something to look forward to—and you’ll be more likely to follow through.
✨ Don’t save it just for the weekend. Midweek adventures can be even more energizing. Break up your workweek with a little soul nourishment.
✨ Keep a running list. Start a “Mini-Adventure Ideas” note in your phone or journal. Anytime you see a place you want to explore, a quirky sign, a charming café, or even a historical marker you’ve passed a dozen times but never stopped to read—add it to the list.
✨ Make it yours. This is about you. No guilt. No pressure. Just an invitation to reconnect with joy, play, and presence.
Give Yourself the Gift of Wonder
We’re not meant to simply exist. We’re meant to explore, laugh, discover, and delight.
If you’re feeling stuck or uninspired, a weekly mini-adventure might be just what your soul needs to stretch, breathe, and come alive again.
You deserve a life that lights you up—not someday, but now.
So go ahead, my friend… what’s one little adventure you can plan for this week?
🌟 What would feel light, exciting, or just a little bit rebellious?
🌟 What’s been calling to you that you haven’t made time for?
Pick one thing. Put it on your calendar. And let the magic begin.
